Powerboat Level 1

 

Introduction to boating techniques for launching and recovering a boat from a road trailer,

everyday boat handling and the use of safety equipment.

 

Suggested pre-course

Course Content:                        Launching, preparing the boat, basic boat handling and

                                                returning to shore. Background theory

 

Ability after course:                   Able to drive under supervision

 

Minimum duration:                     1 Day

Powerboat level 2 Inc ICC*

 

Provides the skills and background knowledge needed by the competent powerboat driver and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence.

 

Suggested minimum

Pre-course experience:              None. May be preceded by Level 1

 

Assumed Knowledge:                None

 

Course content:                         All you need to know for self sufficient power boating at a basic level. Course includes launching, mooring, anchoring and recovery plus all the boat driving skills

                                                required for basic competence in a powerboat.

 

Ability after course:                   self sufficient powerboat in the right conditions: aware of own limitations

 

Minimum Duration:                    2 days

Intermediate Powerboat course

 

Covers the practical use of pilotage and passage planning by day on coastal waters,

using both traditional and electronic navigational techniques

Assumed Knowledge:                Minimum age 16. Candidates should be competent

                                                To the standard of National Powerboat Certificate

                                                Level 2 with the coastal endorsement.

 

Course Content:                        A progression from level 2, introducing pilotage,

                                                Navigation and boat handling techniques for planning

                                                Boats on coastal waters by day

 

Ability after course:                   Able to plan and execute short coastal passages by day.

 

Minimum Duration:                    2 days

Powerboat Advanced course

 

Course for leisure and professional boaters wanting to undertake more adventurous trips in small powerboats.

 

 

 

Assumed Knowledge:                Minimum age 17. Candidates should be competent to

                                                The standard of the National Powerboat Certificate

                                                Level 2 (coastal) with a knowledge of navigation and

                                                Chart work to the level of Day Skipper Shore based

                                                Certificate.

 

Course Content.                        Includes pilotage, navigation and boat handling

                                                Techniques for planning boats on coastal waters by day

                                                And night.

 

Ability after course:                   Able to plan and execute coastal trips including return

                                                To familiar port by night.

 

Minimum Duration:                    2 Days including at least one night navigation exercise

Motor cruising Courses

 

 

 

Helmsman Practical Course

 

This two-day course covers basic boat handling, engine checks and safety. It is ideal for the new owner who is conscious of the difficulty and potential hazards of boat handling in the marina.

 

Suggested minimum

pre-course experience:               Some practical experience desirable.

 

Assumed Knowledge:                None

 

Course Content :                       Safety, helmsmanship, boat handling and introduction to engine maintenance.

 

Ability After Course :                Competent to handle motor cruiser of specific type in sheltered waters.

 

Minimum Duration :                   2 days.

 

Course Cost                           £250.00 + VAT per person (own boat)

Day Skipper Practical Motor Cruising Course (Tidal)

 

The practical course gives you a chance to take charge on short passages under

instruction with plenty of advice and help from the instructor. Designed for tidal

waters.

 

Suggested minimum

pre-course experience :              2 days on a motor cruiser

 

Assumed Knowledge :               Basic navigation and helmsmanship.

 

Course Content :                       Pilotage, boat handling, seamanship and navigation.

.

Ability After Course :                Can skipper a motor cruiser in familiar waters by day.

 

Minimum Duration :                   4 days or 2 weekends

Coastal Skipper Practical Motor Cruising Course (Tidal)

 

The more ambitious motor cruising skipper can improve his or her skills on a Coastal Skipper Course. The course consists of skippered passages by each of the trainees in a whole variety of situations. Designed for Tidal Waters.

 

Suggested minimum

pre-course experience :              15 days, 2 days as skipper, 300 miles, 8 night hours

 

Assumed Knowledge :               Navigation to Coastal Skipper shore based standard.

Boat handling to Day Skipper Practical standard.

 

Course Content :                         Skipper a motor cruiser on coastal passages by day and night

 

Ability After Course :                Skipper a motor cruiser on coastal passages by day and night

 

Minimum Duration :                   5 days

Theory courses

 

VHF/SRC radio Course

 

A one-day course for the Short Range Certificate (SRC) covers all the radio procedures.

 

Suggested minimum

Pre-course experience:              None

 

Assumed Knowledge:                None   

 

Course Content:                                    Use of Marine radio, in GMDSS, routine, distress

                                                And emergency procedures

 

Ability after course:                   Can use a Marine VHF radio.

 

Course duration:                        1 Day
